This has been a dramatic article title, but it is also my wish for the world. I’ve been closely following the major reveals of E3 and have been getting excited about the newly announced Avengersgame, Cyberpunk 2077Final Fantasy 7 remake, and many others. I couldn’t help but notice, however, all of the awful mobile games that were being announced at the event as well. 

I don’t want to sound like a video game snob, but I can’t stand mobile games. It infuriates me to see how their ‘in-app purchase’ model has corrupted triple A console titles. DLC existed before that brought large chucks of content to games, but this “give me $4.99 for super crystals” thing I see all the time is mobile gaming’s fault. 

It is a different type of buyer being marketed to. The kind who want to download something to play for 5-10 minutes at a time and maybe get suckered into spending ninety-nine cents here and there because, hey it isn’t even a dollar, right? 

One of the most offensive that’s right, offensive) mobile announcements had to be Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad. This game is set to feature several iconic characters from Ubisoft’s lineup of Tom Clancy characters such as the legendary agent Sam Fisher of Splinter Cell. As a person who has played many games in the Clancy universe, I can’t help but feel this is a sloppy cash grab attempting to be a Smash Bros. style crossover with none of the charm. Judging from gameplay shown, you click on a spot on the screen and the character shoots other characters on the other side of the screen. Yeah. You click, like in every mobile game, and the character does all the fighting. You get to watch the same shooting animation on your muted phone for hours.

Maybe this is good content for some people, but I don’t understand why it debuted at E3 like it was a comparable title to other games. Are gamers supposed to be genuinely excited about mobile releases at this conference? All I can say is, keep the mobile game promotion limited to YouTube ads. After all, whatever will I do without some super loud commercial music blowing out my ear drums before I skip it in the allotted five seconds?
